Mike Hassett (born in Killorglin, County Kerry) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Laune Rangers and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1994 until 2001. Hassett captained Kerry to the National Football League & Munster Championships in 1997, missing out on the All-Ireland final that Kerry won. There was controversy at the end of the year when he did not receive an All Ireland medal which led to him and his younger brother Liam not playing with Kerry for the 1998 season. In 2000 however he was part of the Kerry team that won the All Ireland. He won All Ireland Under 21 Medals in 1995. He had much success with Laune Rangers winning County, Munster and All Ireland club championships with them. He also played with Wicklow side An Tochar. Currently Mike is taking part in a table tennis competition. Despite his success with kerry over the years this ping pong championship is undoubtedly the biggest competition of his career. Curran bookmakers have slashed the odds on Hassett becoming the champion prior to Christmas due to recent results. He has been described by his opponents as quiet and unassuming but very gifted at the sport. Staying injury free will be key for Hassett in his quest for glory.
